“Martha's call for personal responsibility and individual initiative provides a refreshing break from what too often is the lock-step opinion of the ethnic powers that be in California who look to government first to right every wrong and solve every problem.”

...and so I had to see if she had done one of her “There were September 11ths, one being the poetic justice of the other” spiel.  She didn't as far as it read on the website's posted review of her visit, but I found what she said about when Neruda told her to write fiction instead of being a journalist particularly amusing….

A journalist early in her career, Allende described how an interview with the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda turned her into a writer of fiction. Neruda told her she was "the worst journalist in the country" and asked her "why don't you switch to literature where all these defects are virtues?"

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when he gave her this sage advice…I wonder if his diplomacy and tact were lost on her.  She is a fantastic fantasy writer. She's got flair but she suffers from the common ailment that plagues the Left. No matter how many hundreds of millions of people die under socialist and communist regimes, Leftists never give up their fantasies about the construct.

They clutch on to their presumptuous notions that if only they, or someone other than a Stalin or Mao or Kim Jung Ill or fill in the blank, were or had been in charge, then their utopian ideals will or would have worked.  Remember, it's called fantasy fiction...
